Hot Lumumba

Are you stuck on how to celebrate democratic leaders of African nations? Then try this lumumba! Named after Patrice Lumumba, this recipe is from the other Andy Hamilton.

Prep time:
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Makes: 1 mug

Ingredients
1 mug milk
1tbsp hot chocolate powder (or cocoa powder mixed with sugar)
1 drop vanilla extract
30ml rum/brandy/amaretto (or any spirit of your choice really)

N.B this is a recipe for a hot lumumba, if you want a cold lumumba then swap out the hot chocolate for pre-bought cold chocolate milk.

1. Pump up the lumumba

In the microwave, or a small saucepan, heat 1 mug full of milk.

Once it is steaming hot, stir in 1 drop of vanilla extract and 1tbsp of hot chocolate powder. Take a brisk slurp to make room for your spirit of choice, and add in 30ml of said spirit.

Top with cream, or serve straight away.

Dink and sink!

Food for Thought

Lizzy says: “I saw this in an incredibly remote ski hut in Austria over the Christmas break and was confused why Patrice Lumumba’s name was on a drink’s machine… I was too nervous to try it there and then, so of course I put it forward to the Gasp Council for consideration. Kate and I had a fun (if brief) time making this. I used amaretto and loved the nutty fruity notes it added to the hot chocolate! I have had this a few times a week since because it is a great post-work snack 10/10”

Kate says: “After Lizzy posted this I was really sad because basically the week after we made our Lumumbas I dropped that mug on the floor. It was my number one mug I miss it terribly 🙁
Mug aside, the contents were very nice. This gave me a flashback to a period in Lizzy and my teenage years where we were obsessed with Bailey’s hot chocolates. I liked it for that heart warming memory, and the body warming alcohol but as a non-skiier with no need for some warming I think I would just take my hot chocolate au naturel 5/10
