If you need a spooky treat for your next Halloween party, look no further than these Ossa di morto. Recipe from Siciliani Creativi,
Prep time: 2 days
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Makes: 16 bones
Ingredients
200g flour
200g sugar
50ml of water
pinch of fine salt
pinch of cinnamon
large pinch of ground cloves
1. Outside bones

Channel your inner captain Holt and shout bone at the top of your voice as you gather your ingredients. In a saucepan, add all of the ingredients EXCEPT the flour together. Bring it to a boil and let it boil for a couple of minutes on a medium heat. The mixture will be foamy and bubbly

This next bit all happens quickly because we have to work with the mixture before it cools too much so make sure your work surface is clear and floured. Add the 200g of flour into the sugar mixture, turn of the heat and mix together with a wooden spoon

Pour this mixture on to your floured work surface and move around with a spatula a bit so it cools down slightly. Roll the mixture into two rolls and cut your bones on a diagonal to your desired size (we chose about 3cm)

Pop your cut pieces onto a parchment lined baking tray and cover with another piece of parchment. Leave the bones to dry out for two days at room temperature

Once two days have passed, preheat your oven to 170°C. Add in the tray with the bones on and cook for around 15-20 minutes. They should puff up into two layers (see cover photo) but keep your eye on them as ours took less time, around 10 minutes.
Dink, sink and try not to break your teeth!

Food for Thought

Lizzy says: “”This was such an exciting and intriguing recipe suggestion from Kate and I was so excited to make these biscuits. After sampling the dough, it was very hard to wait the two days for these bony boys to dry. Unfortunately mine didn’t work – the insides didn’t plume outwards as they should have – instead they were extra hard and a little burnt. They are definitely a biscuit that needs dunking in tea first (maybe for a few hours!). Watch your outside bones as you eat! 6/10
Kate says: “As you can see from our dink and sink, these bones were rock solid. This could have come from the cooking time, perhaps we over did it. The flavour of these was really great once you’d dissolved them a bit in your mouth and they felt very seasonally appropriate with the spiciness from the cloves. I’m not sure I would make them again unless I was going to a Halloween or Day of the Dead party 7/10“
