Sorrel Drink

If you wish that you were having Christmas on the beach, Jamaican style, try transporting yourself by making Seriouseats Jamaican Sorrel drink.

Prep time: 8 hours
Cooking time:
Makes: 2 small glasses

Ingredients:
38g dried sorrel
87g fresh grated ginger
3 whole cloves
3 allspice berries
124g sugar

1. Sorrel think you can cook?

In a medium-large saucepan, bring 2830ml of water to the boil.

Whilst it is boiling, grate your ginger and crush your allspice berries.

Then, add in 38g sorrel, 87g fresh grated ginger, 10 whole cloves and 3 crushed allspice berries.

Boil for around 8 minutes, until the sorrel has plumped up.

Leave your sorrel to cool on the side and then place, covered, in the fridge for between 8hours and 3 days.

2. The waiting is Jamaicing me crazy

After your drink has rested, strain it through a fine sieve or muslin to remove all of the bitsy parts.

You may need to strain it twice to ensure that it is clear and smooth.

3. Sweeten up your holiday

Create a simple syrup to add to your sorrel.

In a small saucepan, boil 470ml of water and add 124g sugar. Boil the syrup, stirring regularly until the sugar has dissolved.

Add the simple syrup a little at a time, until you have reached the desired sweetness.

Serve over ice and dink and sink!

Food for Thought

Lizzy says: “I am a big fan of a hibiscus tea, so I was very excited to try this cold version. It was very easy to make and it smelled great. However, I found the end result incredibly sour (even though I added plenty of simple syrup!). If I made this again in future I might use the sorrel as a cordial and add lemonade to make it more palatable.. but this time around I did not enjoy drinking it 3/10 “

Kate says: “This was a rather tart drink (maybe from all of the ginger?)which is definitely made for a Caribbean Christmas and not a German winter. I liked it a lot but I think I would prefer to drink it in the summer when it is much more refreshing. I think there are also versions with alcohol which could be fun and I know other countries have similar drinks so maybe I would investigate those too! A perfectly average 5/10

4/10 Gasps
