Prep time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Makes: 1 sour

Ingredients
Sugar syrup:
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup water
(optional lemon/orange peel)

Sour:
50ml whisky
1tsp loose-leaf early grey tea
Ice
25ml sugar syrup
25ml lemon juice
1 egg white

1. Gimme some sugar

Add the 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of water and lemon peel if using to a saucepan and heat until all the sugar is dissolved. Don’t push it too far, we want a syrup not a hard candy! This will make you more sugar syrup than you need, but decant the rest into a bottle – it’s good for up to three weeks in the fridge.

While the syrup is cooling, add the 50ml whisky and 1tsp loose-leaf early grey tea to a cup and leave to infuse for around 30 minutes.

2. Whisk-y me something up

Next, grab your cocktail shaker (or jar with a lid) and add the infused whisky, ice, 25ml sugar syrup, 25ml lemon juice and 1 egg white. Pop on the top and shake vigorously.

Once shaken (not stirred), pour through a strainer, to get out those tea leaves, and into a serving glass.

Dink and drink!

Food for Thought

Lizzy says: “When I drink a cocktail I want to be as sweet as fruit juice, with only the subtle taste of alcohol. This drink, as the name suggests, was obviously very sour. I also could have filtered out my earl grey better as the drink was quite bitty with tea grounds. I would make this again if I was having a fancy dinner party though 7/10

Kate says: “I’m not usually one to choose a whisky based cocktail but this one was surprisingly delicious! I loved the hint of earl grey tea and the lemoniness of it. It is not, however, sour and is very creamy because of the egg white. That means it goes down very easily – so BEWAR. I would definitely make this again, especially if I had some friends over that I wanted to impress, plus the sugar syrup keeps for a while in the fridge so you can whip up a couple in a week. 9/10″
