Nog

Get into the Christmas spirit with some spirits. We make this eggcellent eggnog recipe from Jeffrey Morgenthaler.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes (plus cooling time)
Makes: 2 small glasses

Ingredients
1 egg
45g caster sugar
30ml
brandy
30ml spiced rum
90ml whole milk
60ml double cream
Nutmeg for grating on top

1. Let’s nog something together

Whip out your plastic peg leg, add the egg to a bowl and give it a blitz for about a minute until it’s nice and foamy. Add the 45g sugar slowly and blend together for an additional minute.

Have a good old chuckle at your cooking companion’s detachable plastic peg leg. This step is imperative for extra festive cheer.

Mix together the 30ml brandy, 30ml spiced rum, 90ml whole milk and 60ml double cream in a separate jug for easy pouring. Add gradually while keeping your blender running.

Chill in the fridge to allow all the flavours to get to know each other like coworkers at an office Christmas party.

When ready to drink, pour into your best fancy glass (not just for when the Queen comes, but also for drinking alone when a pandemic forces you to stay home) and grate over a little nutmeg for that extra Christmassy pizzazz.

Dink and drink!

Food for Thought

Lizzy says: “Well I nogger! I have waited yonks to try eggnog, and what a delight it was. So creamy and rich and, crucially, a lot less eggy than expected (in my mind it has always tasted of brandy and cinnamon spiced scrambled eggs). The best thing about this recipe is that it was ready within a hot log fire of a second. Would definitely whip this eggy delight up if I were to have a pre-crimbo sleep over and Princess switch watching party 8/10.

Kate says: “A raw egg?! In a drink?! This seemed ludicrous, but as Lizzy pointed out correctly to me – that’s quite common in cocktail making. We wanted to see what all the fuss was about with this one. It seems to be a staple of an American Christmas and having made it, I think I understand why. Silky smooth, creamy and a good kick of alcohol. I’d definitely make this again, but probably follow the instructions and put it into the fridge to get cool before drinking. I also feel like you don’t need much as it’s very sweet and creamy – just make sure you’ve also got enough to quench other Christmas guests’ thirst. 9/10″
